I have the amazing opportunity to be an intern at the Palm Beach Zoo in South Florida this summer. I am working in the animal training department so I work with the animals for the Wings Over Water show and Wild Things show.
I chose this because it is a little more hands on than basic zoo keeping, and I get to interact with kids and educate people, which I love.
Unfortuatly I am not allowed to post any pictures of me with the animals or the animals behind the scenes. But I am going to tell you a little about two of my favorite animals I work with
Scooter is a Binturong, or bear cat, from Asia. He is very old and this is NOT him in the picture.. Just a stock photo from google. But I love working with Scooter. He is old and has cancer, so they basically let him do whatever he wants. He loves to sniff my hair and climb on my shoulders. My favorite thing to do is take him for a walk through the zoo.
OHH and he smells like POPCORN!! How cool is that? It's natural and is secreted by his many scent glands. I always laugh when I come home from the zoo smelling like popcorn.
Darla is an African Ground Hornbill, which is by the name, a ground dwelling bird that lives in Africa. She has beautiful eyelashes and makes the sweetest little coos and squeeks. She's precious! Especially when she brings you rocks and twigs. She preforms in the Wings Over Water show. (Also a google photo)
